Plexus is a ‘mod’ (Modification) or plug-in for Minecraft. It’s a Twitter client that allows you to read and post Twitter tweets right inside Minecraft, the text is “Projected” onto any wall inside your world.
It’s also an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) ‘lite’ client, the text from any channel is projected onto any wall. You can publicly chat and send and receive private messages, but no file transfer or any DCC activity.
The walls you use can be made of any Minecraft block, vanilla or from another mod, the text can then be altered to suit the block colour and environment, for instance, a single black wool block with white text so small it fits within one block, or a giant outdoor wall with a font so big each letter is the size of your player!
..But wait, there’s more! Plexus will also grab the latest News headlines and stories from around the world and project those into your Minecraft world too, just in case the world comes to an end and you were too busy playing Minecraft to notice 🙂
I’m hoping to add other networking services when/If APIs are available. Facebook developers seem to have gone out of their way to make their API not available to non web applications, but I would like to add this too. Maybe Skype text chat if an API is available too.
I’ve written this mod for myself, but thought I’d share, so not really taking any requests for new features or looking for bug reports, I use it every day, so I’ll probably find and fix bugs I find, I’ll be spending most of my spare time working on my Sim-U-Kraft mod
Minecraft Forge v6.5.0 or higher – Download Forge 188.8.131.520
Install that into your Minecraft.jar file or use MultiMC or similar program to do this for you. (MultiMC will install Forge for you with 2 clicks of the mouse, it doesn’t get any easier)
Download Plexus v0.1.0 for Minecraft v1.4.6 (and v1.4.7) – I’m having problems updating this.
None yet…it’s brand-new!
IMPORTANT: unzip the file above, as it contains the mod’s zip file and 5 jar files required by this mod, all files need to go into your minecraft/mods/ folder and you’re done. Forge may give a warning about finding non-mod files in your mods folder, but that’s ok. I just can’t find anywhere else to put these files so that Forge can see them, if you know where I can put them, tweet me @PlexusMC (I don’t have the source for the libraries so can’t embed it in the mod’s zip file)
Click the images below for a closer look…
Font sizes and colors are configurable, so black wool with white/yellow text or white wool with black text, anything you like. Font size 1 will fit the “screen” on a single block, Font size 1000 will make the screen so big it will disappear into the fog!
The IRC, Twitter and News boxes (which project the text) can be placed into your world using a spawner item, as talk is cheap and so is dirt, each spawner is crafted using dirt arranged like so…
This is the twitter spawner item recipe, hold it in your hand and right click the ground to place a box down. Each box will need authenticating with twitter and each one can be connected to a different Twitter account.
Once you’ve placed your box down, the text will be facing one of the four directions so may not be visible at first, you can either right-click the box or stand close to it and press P (default key can be changed in Minecraft key settings) you can then change the directions of the text to match your wall/screen, change the font size and colors used. Eg. font size 5 will fit on a 3×2 screen, ideal for indoors!
IMPORTANT TIP: if you have several boxes in your world, you need to stand closest to the one you want to operate and press P. For example to post a tweet on your twitter account, sand close to the twitter box and press P, then walk over to your IRC box and press P to type a message to the channel, you’ll see at the bottom of your screen where/what you’re about to post to.
The IRC box should connect to any IRC server, I’d recommend irc.esper.net as there are A LOT of minecraft channels on that server, as the mod doesn’t display a channel list, you can find the current available channel names here. Also, the IRC box is a ‘lite’ client, it doesn’t handle NICKSERV, DCC or any fancy stuff, just public and private text chat in both directions.
To send a private message to another user type:
/pm SomeUser Hello, this is a private message <press return>
Finally, I have a twitter account for this mod: @PlexusMC I’ll post updates on there, if I get time I could answer questions on there too.
Hope you find this mod useful,
